AWS User Group Leader Workshop というもう一つのre:Inventと2018年の抱負

2017年は私にとって多くの方からたくさんのチャンスを頂いた年でした。
韓国や中国のAWS Summitからご招待いただいてのイベント出席や登壇、海外のAWSユーザーグループとのコラボレーションのおかげで、日本だけでなく多くの国や地域の方々との繋がりが生まれ、さらに新しいチャレンジの可能性を感じられるようになりました。

中でもre:Invent2017で行われたAWS User Group Leader WorkshopでのLT（Lightning Talks）登壇は今まで登壇した中で一番シビれる体験で、これまで仲間と参加してきた個々のイベントが一つに繋がったように感じました。

去年ボツになった企画

実は2016年にもre:Inventの際に似たようなLTイベントの企画を作ってAWSのワールドワイドユーザーグループの主催者にメールで連絡を取り提案したのですが、残念ながらすでに別の企画があって実現までは至りませんでした。

今回は事前にアイデアの募集があり、ここで改めて提案した甲斐があったかどうかは不明ですが、ついにLTが実現されることになりました。

なぜLT？

LTにこだわっていたのは、一つのセッションが5分と短くたくさんの方がチャレンジできるフェアな点と、発表者が工夫して短時間に凝縮されたメッセージは参加者に響きやすく、コミュニティのコアになっているパッションを伝えやすいため、そして何より参加者がいろいろなパターンのセッションを聞けて盛り上がるからです。

一つ目の幸運

幸運にも世界で5枠中、日本の登壇枠が割り当てられ、日本のユーザーグループでもスピーカーの応募が始まりました。
候補者の決定は投票制で、名前ではなく発表内容のみ公開されるため、私はすでに考えていた内容で応募しました。

[ポイント]
* 日本コミュニティが50を超える支部ごとに分かれたマイクロサービス的なスケールアウト手法でスケールに成功し、海外にも交流の場を広げている点
* それらが集まってJAWS DAYSなどAWSで社会にインパクトを与えるようなイベントを続けている点
* 会場の参加者と一緒に今日をワールドワイドなユーザーグループが繋がって未来を作るDay1にしたい

しかし投票でスピーカーが決定するのは渡航の数日前だったため、決定を待ってからネタを作って練習していたら移動時間や時差ボケもあって間に合わないと思い発表を待たずに準備をはじめました。

スクリプトはフィリピンに住む英語の先生にGoogle docs上でネイティブチェックをしてもらいます。
内容を読んだ先生の反応もそこそこ良かったため、もし選ばれず今回のネタを捨てることになっても、どこかで役に立つだろうと思って準備を進めました。
あとは一人で時間を計りながら何度も練習を重ねてブラッシュアップする作業が続きます。

二つ目の幸運

ありがたいことにたくさんの方に投票していただき、晴れて登壇の切符を手にしました。
主催者から送られてきた発表者へのオーダーはこちら。要するに一枚のスライドでTEDスタイルの発表です。

Length: these will be short, 5 minute max, lightning talks. Very informal, meant to give a quick overview of some success stories & tips from your UG (and then hopefully sparking deeper conversation around that topic).
Only one slide: each of you can have 1 cover slide with an overview of your UG, key stats, etc. Other than that, no slides, let’s keep this simple!

Hi, everyone. I'm Seiji Akatsuka. I'm a member of organizing team of Japan AWS User Group.
First of all, Thank you very much for giving us such a great opportunity.

I live in Northeastern part of Japan. It’s a countryside and was difficult to learn AWS before joining the community. Is there anybody who knows this area in Japan?
But I think that lots of people may know that the great earthquake and tsunami waves in March 11, 2011. It struck off in this area.

After that, lots of people around the world helped us as volunteers, giving donation etc. Of course, our original member also worked as volunteer through community. For example, they migrated Japan Red Cross's website to S3 hosting and CloudFront. Because the website had been hanged up by huge amount of access by people need help or want to give help from all over the world.

They did it only for 30 mins though most of people thought that it's never possible in that serious situation. It taught us that we have 2 of super powers. The first one is AWS technologies and second one is strong relationship of the community. It connected me to the community as well.

Now, we have over 50 branches in all over Japan including countryside, and they are running individually like microservices architecture. It can easily scale out the community and keep us for being enthusiastic. So we can keep holding an annual big event named JAWS DAYS which have more than 1,000 of attendees including many nationalities. It connect a lot of people to the community and we can find new heroes from this event to foster innovation.

And recently, we've started to collaborate with other UserGroups which in other countries. Especially in this year, some UserGroups in APAC areas and we held a meetup event in Korea. We shared knowledges, experiences and passion with each other. Korean UserGroup team hosted it and offered us a lot of things to held that event. So now, AWS APAC community connect us to the International relationship where ever we live.

Lastly, we'd like to contribute more to our friends and expand friendship with all of you. So, let's have fun the whole week together. It's still day1 for developing the AWS world wide UserGroup which can connect everyone who loves AWS like us.

たった7パラグラフの発表のために大げさですが、一緒に参加した日本のみんなに喜んでもらえたことと、世界中から集まったアジア・アメリカ・ロシア・ヨーロッパなどなどたくさんのオーガナイザーの皆さんから顔と名前を覚えてもらい、話しができたのはとても大きな収穫でした。
やっぱり100回の参加よりも1回の登壇ですね。

なぜ国際交流？

ユーザーグループが行う国際交流の大きな価値の一つは、地方でも都市部でも、住んでいる場所や所属に関係なく、フラットな立場でアイデアを出し合いながら一人ではできない大きな機会を作り出せる点だと思います。またその過程でお互いの文化や政治、社会の優先度の違いを知ることは、人種や性別など表面的な違いを超えた重要なソフトスキルでもある本質的なダイバーシティのあるチームワークについて学ばされますし、彼らとの会話の中でより日本人としての自分についても考えされられます。
